ARCADIA, Calif. - Midnight Interlude, who only beat maidens on March 20 in his third career start, pulled a 13-1 upset in Saturday's $1 million Santa Anita Derby, catching pacesetter Comma to the Top in the final 50 yards.

Ridden by Victor Espinoza, Midnight Interlude ($29.80) ran 1 1/8 miles in 1:48.56, winning his stakes debut. Comma to the Top, the winner of the Grade 1 CashCall Futurity at Hollywood Park last December, held second, losing by a head and finished 2 1/4 lengths clear of Mr. Commons in the field of nine. Silver Medallion, the 5-2 favorite, finished fourth, followed by Anthony's Cross, Indian Winter, Bench Points, Quail Hill, and Offlee Wild Boys.

Midnight Interlude races for breeder Arnold Zetcher and trainer Bob Baffert, who was forced to withdraw Jaycito, his leading contender for the Grade 1 Santa Anita Derby on Friday, because of a bruised foot.

By War Chant, Midnight Interlude has won 2 of 4 starts and $649,600. He earned $600,000 in the Santa Anita Derby, and has sufficient earnings in graded stakes to start in the Kentucky Derby.
