I used to work on the Illinois Central Railroad from 1960 to 1967 and rode this fantastic train many many times from Chicago to Carbondale, Ill. and everytime I hear this song, it brings back wonderful memories of what a fantastic time this was on the railroad...I love this song...its a shame that this train The City Of New Orleans no longer exists like it was back in those days.... @mattdstone You realize that there are anal apetures in this world that will read what you've written, and get ideas, right? Damn, dude, that's as much tempting fate as telling a pitcher that he's throwing a no-hitter.

This is the only video on youtube I've seen with ZERO dislikes. That makes me smile :-)

sure am glad Arlo decided to listen to Steve Goodman sing his song, for this song never gets old I love every time it comes on the radio, everything else just goes away until it is over. Great job Arlo, thanks for posting.

Steve Goodman smiled right up to the very end. He was a warm and kind Human Being. Thank you Mr. Guthrie for sharing that story. Thanks for recording his great song too.

My dad rode the rails during the Great Depression. As a child he regaled me with tales of how to hop a boxcar, how he ate and survived on the road, his encounters with the Wobblies (Workers of the World), etc. This song always makes me think of him. May he R.I.P.

This song has become a National Treasure, and this is a classic performance, with two other National Treasures involved, Arlo and Pete. The song has brought tears to my eyes ever since I first saw Arlo perform it, several months before it was released on "Hobo's Lullabye." Thanks for sharing this video!
