Let me answer that: defaulting on foreign debt would be disastrous for the dollar as the world's confidence in it would disappear...not to mention what about the billions in government backed securities. Dumb question and premise.

Is it really a "dumb question and premise"? As many Ron Paul supporters note, the money is worthless now. It is just paper. It isn't backed by anything. So, saying to the Chinese, we aren't going to pay you back, or printing large chunks of money and paying them back with "worthless" money, would be an option if things were that bad.

I've had friends go on rants about the dollar being "a worthless federal reserve note ..." and I often counter, "If it is worthless, I'd be happy to take those off your hands ..." None ever give up their worthless federal reserves notes and that usually shuts them up.

The dollar is not worthless now (weak) but you default on the borrowed money and the dollar WILL cease to be the reserve currency of the world - then you will see total collapse. BAD economic conditions here. People would demand the money be backed with something again. Ah, but is all our gold still at Fort Knox? Never been audited (though the law says it has to be).  The debtor is slave to the lender.
