Capoeira is an Afro-Brazilian art form that combines elements of martial arts, sports, music, and dance. It was created in Brazil mainly by descendants of African slaves with Brazilian native influences, probably beginning in the 16th century. It is known by quick and complex moves, using mainly kicks and quick leg sweeps, with some ground and aerial acrobatics, knee and headbutts.

The word capoeira comes from the Tupi-guarani language, referring to the low vegetation areas in the intern part of Brazil.

A capoeira é uma forma de arte afro-brasileira que combina elementos de artes marciais, esportes, música e dança. Foi criada no Brasil, principalmente por descendentes de escravos Africano com influências brasileiras nativas, provavelmente no início do século 16. Sabe-se por movimentos rápidos e complexos, utilizando principalmente chutes e varreduras do pé rápido, com algum terreno e acrobacia aérea, joelho e cabeçadas.

A palavra capoeira vem do tupi-guarani, referindo-se às áreas de vegetação baixa, na parte interna do Brasil.
