Pink Floyd and Genesis were masters of tour spectacular as they pioneered the big light shows. Jethro Tull were incredible live, when I see the Madison Square Garden 1978 and Los Angeles Sports Arena 1980 footage and even Styx's 1981 Paradise Theater Tour, Led Zeppelin and Queen's last few tours with Freddie Mercury, they all beat the living shit out of the Madonnas, Mariahs and Britneys with 200 dancers and lip synching crap.

P. S. I also saw the Pink Floyd "Pulse" tour and LOVED IT. But...it works for THEM because of the music. It fits the style but I agree with Ian, if he did that today he'd look ridiculous. (picture him in his "Minstrel in the Gallery" outfit with his bald head...well, you get his drift)

I fondly remember my first Tull concert. The Passion Play tour in 73 @ Boston Garden. We were on the floor about 3 rows from the back. Ian had on what I call his blue space suit. They played a video of the Hare...and Ian popped his face into the video and the crowd went nuts! He's a truly BRILLIANT man who has to this day never learned to read music and has never had a drivers license. He's worth about $30 million dollars so he's not only a musical genius, he's a good business man too.

I love hearing Ian Anderson say "fuck"!

...Ian Anderson had fun on stage in the seventees ...and that fun transmitted to the audience. I dont think we'll be seeing Michael Jackson again as I've been told he died today 25/06/09.

He absolutely my biggest hero. Brilliant musician and fascinating man. He should be a politician and be on the news, speaking, every day for a few minutes and set us all straight.
It wasn't the lights and props and production at a Tull concert back in the day. Even then those were minimal compared to some other groups. But it was Ian's and the band's whirling, gesticulating, mad, elegant presence that made the show. It was like some kind of ritual that only they could bring about -- and rituals are important I think. I've seen the grainy footage. It still works for me and holds up today, sans fromage.
