  • Leo on Martha Stewart, the worst thing that could happen for the breed.

  • My aunt has been breeding these dogs for years, even when her two children were young. Right now she owns 5 of them and I have never ever once seen a single one of them act aggressively. We go there every year for Christmas with our tiny little dog and they treat her like their baby. Despite their size they really are harmless.

  • i have a leonberger and its true that they are gentile giants because bear (thats his name lol) has had severe hip problems and spine issues since he was a puppy. He was abused, lived in filth, and had his tail cut off. He was found on the side of the road in a box with his sister, but luckily they were both saved by the CCRC. Even after what happened to him he is the biggest love and only wants to cuddle. He is four now, and finally has the love he deserves :)) <3

  • I love the leonberger!

  • @UKExile06 The modern leonberger, since the war, has had Newfoundland added as there were not enough breeding pairs left in the world to save the breed. However, after 4-5,000 pure-bred crosses since those days, it is safe to assume that it is a pure breed. So they were, like the majority of molosser's, bred for protection, and as an added bonus for pulling carts. The water rescue, including webbed feet, only happened after the Newfoundland component was added.

  • @UKExile06 Heinrich Essig claimed to have used a St Bernard over a landseer over a Gt Pyrenees in order to create a lion-like dog for his town mascot, when he first registered the name of the dog. However, DNA proof shows that the colour markers for the leonberger could not have been created from this mix. In fact written evidence, paintings and even a statue exists to prove that the dog was around since the 1500s at least.

  • @opinonion ...its true...the fact they they make amazing rescue dogs and such is an added bonus!!

  • I am NOT a dog person, at al. But my in laws have a Leo and she is the sweetest dog ever. I always say - if every dog was like Sally, I would be a dog person. I wish they were a wee bit more common, I would love to get a Leo or a Leo mix whenever we get around to getting a family dog. Gentle giant is just the best description for them, and so calm too!

  • @homefront...you're wrong. The average life expectancy for a Leonberger is 8-10 years.
