This video is a stop action movie demonstrating the carving of the SheVaCon amulet for 2008. From the drawing to the finished product, we watch Kirk McLaren carve from a block of wax the art used at the Science Fiction convention held in Roanoke Virginia. More information about SheVaCon may be found at www.shevacon.org. More information about jewelry by Kirk McLaren may be found at www.amuletsbymerlin.com

  • What kind of wax they use? can you make your own wax?

  • Greetings!

I use a special wax for carving from Du-Matt Corp and may be found at dumatt.com

Kerr also creates a kind of wax that is also very helpful. The wax I used in the video was of their harder forms capable of carving and filing. I then used a softer wax for the sculpting (application) portion of the caving. Wax for casting of a special blend that will evaporate properly and not erode the investment when casting, thus destroying the detail of the finished piece.
