Chapter Twenty

It was after three in the morning when most of the kids made their way back to the "house". Josh was tired and immediately fell onto the bed. Chris slid off his jacket and crawled cautiously into the bed. Josh rolled over seeing Chris had his back turned to him.

Josh: You okay?

Chris: yeah, just really tired.

Josh put his arm around Chris who quickly pulled away.

Josh: What?

Chris: Sorry, it's not you.

Josh: What's going on?

Chris: Nothing, just jumpy, I'm sorry.

Chris slowly rolled to his other side now facing Josh, and smiled.

Chris: Now get some sleep, it's just been a long day.

Josh: Yeah.

Josh quickly stole a kiss and turned back around facing away from Chris who snuggled into him. The sun was just rising when Josh opened his eyes and smiled at Chris who lay on his stomach. Then he noticed the small of Chris's back and pulled up the shirt further revealing a dark purple bruise.

Chris: What are you doing!?

He quickly rolled over pulling his shirt down.

Josh: What happened?

Chris: It's no big deal.

Josh: Why didn't you tell me?

Chris: It wasn't important, why are you making a big deal about it?

Josh: I should know if something is wrong, if your hurt!

Chris: Your making a big deal out of nothing. Sometimes things happen and you just live with it, fight another day. You might understand if you were me.

Josh: I don't understand!?

Chris: I didn't mean it that way.

Josh pulled away and walked to the window, ignoring Chris's hushed yelling telling him to come back. He climbed out and was hit by the crisp morning air. He gripped the rusted metal and took in a breath. He needed to clear his head, what the hell was he doing? Chris was right, he didn't have to be here, he put himself in this situation and now he was entangled in a life he would have never imagined.
Nick: You okay?

Josh shrugged and kept looking at the alley below them.

Josh: I don't know what I'm doing.

Nick: Let's go for a walk.

They didn't say anything as they walked along the sidewalk heading toward the diner.

Nick: You can say what your thinking.

Josh: I'm not thinking anything.

Nick: Do you like boys?

Josh: hu?

Nick: Well you and Chris?

Josh: I never thought about it but I never thought about any one the way I think about him.

That brought a smile to Josh's face as he thought of the feelings, that's what it was all about. He wasn't going to forget who he was, what he was there for and maybe fall in love along the way.

Josh: I know what's on my mind now.

Nick: What?

Josh: Were not going to live like this any more. Were going to save every one.

Nick: I like that plan.

"What plan is that?"

As they turned the corner they were met by a face, a face that made Nick's cheeks turn pink.

Nick: N-nothing. What are you doing here?

Brad: I've been taking this way to school every day hoping to run into you, I guess today's my lucky day.

They both smiled.

Nick: Your kidding right?

Brad: Sorry, you probably think I'm crazy. I should probably go.

Josh: No. We know crazy, your not it.

Brad: Good, um... would you want to walk to school with me?

Josh: I should get back, but Nick can!

Nick: Are you sure?

Josh: Go! I need to talk to Chris, just be back before Joe wakes up.

Nick: Okay.

Josh smiled and ran back to the house, he needed to make things right.
