Niagara County Democratic Committee fundraiser on July 9, 2008 at the Red
Coach Inn in Niagara Falls, was spoiled when protesters crashed the event. Scheduled keynote speaker New York State Senate Minority Leader Malcolm Smith chose not to enter the fundraiser after being confronted by a wave of protesters. The protest, which was instigated due to allegations of physical and verbal abuse by former Vice Chairwoman Diane Roberts against current Chairman Dan Rivera, kept Senator Smith, who waited down the street from the Inn for over an hour, from entering the fundraiser.
Despite the protestors' desire to bring awareness to the victimization of women, several high profile public officials still chose to attend the event including North Tonawanda Mayor Larry Soos, Lewiston Supervisor Fred Newlin, Erie County Democratic Chairman Len Lenihan, New York State Assemblywoman Francine DelMonte, Niagara Falls Mayor Paul Dyster, and Sam Williams, co-chairman of the New York State Working Families Party.
