@popiel52 lucky you!

Arlen - that's where I first heard Ellen, on WMMS. I had an interview with her (with dj Digby) on a 7" tape - long gone. She played the Smiling Dog a few times. I saw her here in Atlanta, about 10 years ago. Always loved the band name - Fear Itself.

I bought this album when it first came out, and as an impressionable teenager it left a big impression. Finally got a copy again a couple of years ago...still enchants. Sure it is a bit rough but hey this was 1967.

The other version is on the album Up From the Skies: The Polydor. It's even better imo.

Ellen McIlwaine wrote this song about Jimi Hendrix, whom she played with at Greenwhich Village's Cafe Au Go Go during the mid-60's.

I didn't know about the band until the internet, but Ellen's solo career was well-documented on the Cleveland radio station WMMS. Solo, she recorded a different version of "Underground River" that seems preferable to my ears---her voice got bigger and deeper.
