Possibly only appreciated if you have seen the movie starring Anthony Hopkins, but this clip shows the display commemorating Burt Munroe and his Indian motorcycle and the speeds he achieved on it at the Bonneville Salt Flats. The display itself is situated in E.Hayes & Sons Hardware Store on Dee Street in Invercargill - an unusual place for it by any standard. Lastly the clip shows a quick look at Oreti Beach approx 5mins drive west of Invercargill on which Burt used to have his practise runs and the occassional race on.

  • i hear that in winter, when the oreti beach freezers over, penguins cause traffic jams

  • Absolutely - it's nearly as bad as when the Sydney Harbour Bridge got shut down because of all the Kangaroos on it or when when Martial Law was declared in Toronto, Canada because of Gangs of Polar Bears roaming the central city sticking their tongues in peoples ears.

  • woooooooowwwww....INSANE.....

  • @WilliamGruff Ok....

  • @MrTpengineer: Methanol (CH3OH) is not an incorrectly spelt form of ethanol (C2H5OH / C2H6O), as you'll discover should you try a tipple of each (I'd advise drinking as much of the ethanol as you wish and then calling an ambulance before trying the methanol), but don't tell the ignorant hicks who wrote the sign that. Just enjoy the little knowledge you have in the knowledge that others are not so well informed as you.

Are you your own grandpa by any chance?

  • great film !!awesome indian

  • @BowlingFreak218 I know it's a fuel, just spelled differnt WOOOW.

  • @MrTpengineer methanol is a fuel you dumb fuck

  • lol Ethanol is spelled wrong.

  • Burt Munro must have had balls of steel riding that thing at 200mph. I've got a Suzuki GSXR750, I did 160 on it once and it was pretty scary. That Indian must have taken some controlling at that speed. i've been to NZ a couple of times, the next time I'm going to go to Invercargill to have a look at that bike!

  • @sfcrashley

Yes they are. At one point Munro had two rolling frames, so that he could work on the engine in NZ and not need to bring the whole bike back and forth between NZ and USA.

At some point in time a second engine was found, and so it came to be that there are two Munro specials. In addition the man had a modified Velocette motorcycle. It may well have been the worlds fastest Vellocette.

    Cheers!

  • Just watched the film, Love it. The bike in the film is spot on, thanks for posting this. I read when Burt was around 78 he lost his sense of balance and wanting to keep his bikes nearby sold them to a local business man. I guess that was the owner of Hardware store.
