The First Annual Head of the Broad Regatta, sponsored by Columbia Rowing Club and the Friends of the Broad River, will be held on Saturday, October 3, at the Richland County Rowing Center from 10:00 am until 3:00 pm. Admission to the public is free.
The ACC Champion Clemson University Women's Crew, the College of Charleston Crew, Asheville Youth Rowing, Augusta Junior Rowing, Charlotte Youth Rowing, Raptor (Charleston) Youth Rowing, Columbia Youth Rowing and Masters rowers from the clubs will race 75 boats in 12 different events over the 4000 meter course on the Broad River, passing under the I-20 bridge. The regatta finale will feature a series of exciting 500-meter, head-to-head sprint races that can be seen by spectators from start to finish. Rowing will take place in three waves starting at 10:00 am, 11:30 am, and 1:00 pm. The sprint races will be held at 2:00 pm with an award ceremony at 2:45 pm
The Head of the Broad is being held to raise awareness of rowing in the Midlands of South Carolina and to support the Columbia Rowing Club Youth Rowing Program which is in its inaugural year. Columbia Youth Rowing will compete this fall in the Secret City Head Race (Oak Ridge, TN) and the Head of the South (Augusta, GA), as well as the Head of the Broad. The crew is coached by George Park.
Free spectator parking at the Richland County Rowing Center and Riverside Golf by entering through Riverside Golf, 1600 Garner Lane.
Hot food and hot and cold beverages will be available to purchase, or bring some chairs a picnic lunch and enjoy this virtually unknown area along the Broad River.
