This is some field testing of prototype software to control the "milapse head" (meade telescope head). I filmed in real time on a JVC GR-X5 and sped up to a maximum of 2x. I was surprised how well it worked for real-time work as it was obviously designed for time-lapse. Shows the first level of capabilities with smooth start/stop pans...

  • its very good. Its been very interesting following your progress.

So how do you go about framing the shot? Do you manually have to type in 'coordinates' or can you set it at a specefic spot and tell the program to to stop there for x amount of time and then move to the next coordinate over x amount of time?

  • Actually at the moment it's just: set a speed for the axis and accel/decel over a set time. The prog. then calculates how far the head will travel in each axis.

  • Gotta ask you, is this software you wrote/are writing, and if so how I'd love to know what your planning on doing with it when your done and whether its mac (hopefully) or windows based. Your stuff is great as usual, thanks, Duncan.

  • It's a windows app... I've been away for a while but hopefully will make some more progress soon.

  • Is this with that telescope 2 axis controller?

  • yes, and the choppiness is compression btw... it's smooth as silk in the original video.

  • Cool! A question: Do you use the #494 controller and attach a laptop to it? Or do you need the #497 to do so?

  • Masterfully done!..... I am a film maker and have followed your development of the time lapse heads with great interest. Has the software control progressed? I have a stop motion (claymation) project in the works. I have purchased the Meade head, tripod and the 495. A "poor man's motion control would be most wonderful!

If the software works then maybe it could be used as a "poor man's motion control rig......Thanks for your efforts.

  • Very good, and very interesting!
