Suicide on the Golden Gate Bridge

Every year an average of more than 30 people commit suicide by jumping off the Golden Gate Bridge. A group of people are proposing that barriers be built to prevent people from committing suicide by jumping off the Golden Gate Bridge. These people are a group consisting mostly of family and friends of suicide "victims" at the Golden Gate Bridge. The cost of various proposals being offered start at $40 million dollars.

I do not agree that it is right to destroy the experience of 100,000+ visitors that come to the bridge each year. People who want to commit suicide will simply find another way to do so, thus the barriers are not likely to actually save any lives, but it will certainly destroy the view and experience of the Golden Gate Bridge.

The Golden Gate Bridge is an icon of the San Francisco Bay Area and NORthern CALifornia. The panoramic view and magnificent perspective of the bay is an experience that we should not be deprived of because a handful of very disturbed people choose to kill themselves there. Even the options that do not obscure the view, such as a steel cable net below the sidewalk, will cost $40 million! Couldn't that money be better used for suicide prevention programs? Wouldn't that save more live? No wonder they recently raised the Golden Gate Bridge Toll by an additional dollar. ($6, FasTrak $5 commuters)

If you are able to handle the topic of suicide, I would recommend a documentary film about suicide on the Golden Gate Bridge, titled simply "The Bridge."

Anyway, as Chris Crocker would say, LEAVE THE GOLDEN GATE BRIDGE ALONE! LEAVE IT ALONE!!!!

If I want to kill myself by jumping from the GGB and there was a barrier I would not kill myself. by suggesting that I would find another way shows how ignorant you are about suicide. preserving the view rather than saving my life is more selfish than the act of suicide. Do us all a favor learn about suicide before you decide that your view is worth more than my life.

@absolutsf I'm not agreeing with this guy, because I don't agree with half the crap he says, but I know from first hand and personal experience, that if someone wants to die, a barrier wont stop them. They'll always find a way. I know I definitely would. So, before you pretend like you know everything about it, you need to realise it's different for everyone.
