i was watching this and thinking a bit. you could drill a hole in the center of your stick, where the screw would go. then push a spike in it or a nail with the head cut off and use that to push on the bottom on the gas can. that then you can poke a hole or make a mark for your hole. this will stop all your guessing.

what if i ever want to remove the dowels stick?
what would i do?

@IEJP You mean take the dowell stick out of the neck? That's one of the hardest things to do, if it's well glued. I'm sure people that do that all the time have some sort of a way to do it, but I've found that unless it's already loose and I can get it to wiggle I just about can't do it. I have spliced a stick to make it longer, cut it off to make it shorter, and sawed it off at the neck and re-drilled it too. If it's loose you can work it around and gradually turn it loose, sometimes/
