Working fire chief and Kaplan University instructor John Mead believes firefighting and public safety are more than careers—they're ways to give back to the community. Earning a degree in KU's Fire Science program may help his students get a leg up on the career ladder with straight-from-the-field information and a wide-ranging curriculum.

  • my future job, after the army !

  • To Kaplan University: Please include females in your video next time. I teach 9th grade and many of the female students express an interest in firefighting, but hear a lot of negative about women being discouraged and treated badly by male firefighters and captains. That seems contradictory to me, since firefighting, as with teaching and nursing, is a helping profession.

  • @damellman not completely true either. you are also stating false info. depending on the department you might need a bachelors, most just an associates degree in fire science is fine if you are in good shape and ready to do the job. you could possible with a very slim chance get a job as a firefighter with no degree but that ain't gonna happen at this point

  • @Ten7d5 not true. where i'm at you can join as a volly at age 14 or 16 depending on the department. also the city near me has 18 and 19 year olds on their department

  • @charlietango33 i live in PA also and i can be a volunteer at 14 if the department isn't to far away. the other departments are 16 that's a little closer but that's whatev i'll figure it out

  • @1CME90 and I always get on my brother for spelling things wrong

  • I been in the Army since Oct 2010, and been at my current (first) duty station since April 2011 and in Aug of last year been recommended for Med Board. I'm considering this job with the desire to be a FireFighter as well. we'll see how my future in the Army ends up being but in worst case scenario, I wanna have some schooling started in case I find myself back in the Civilian world again this year. :(

  • @Leggs130 okay, I don't know what your problem is, but I don't get treated like an angel. Especially not by the firemen I know. They don't give me any special treatment and I would hate it if they did. I'm not really sure why you hate all guys....but whatever bro..

  • @breezyjrmusic well instead of just being a fireman. you go to college for a higher rank like captain or fire chief.

  • were do you go to join vfd

  • @theneilbotticelli here in austin texas AFD doesnt !!

  • Meh The only thing fire fighters do is play xbox all day and occasionally go out to a fire police is the way to go (I am joking)
