The Tree of Life hits theaters on May 27th, 2011.

Cast: Brad Pitt, Jessica Chastain, Sean Penn, Fiona Shaw, Crystal Mantecon, Tamara Jolaine, Joanna Going, Jackson Hurst

From Terrence Malick, the acclaimed director of such classic films as "Badlands", "Days of Heaven" and "The Thin Red Line", "The Tree of Life" is the impressionistic story of a Midwestern family in the 1950's. The film follows the life journey of the eldest son, Jack, through the innocence of childhood to his disillusioned adult years as he tries to reconcile a complicated relationship with his father (Brad Pitt). Jack (played as an adult by Sean Penn) finds himself a lost soul in the modern world, seeking answers to the origins and meaning of life while questioning the existence of faith. Through Malick's signature imagery, we see how both brute nature and spiritual grace shape not only our lives as individuals and families, but all life.

  • FineBrothers Anyone?

  • Obviously this movie is totally ambiguous and could mean anything to any number of people, however to me, it made me question my place in this world, what I should achieve and how I may impact other peoples lives. It made me me think about how I should choose to live my life, and should I decide to have children, and how to teach my children the correct way of life. This is one hell of a thought provoking film. A masterpiece.

  • I won't pretend like I completely understood Terrance Malick's' "The Tree of Life", but I will say that it certainly is an experience. It is complex and imaginative, abstractly beautiful and melancholic; The Tree of Life is more of a work of art than your standard film. That being said this is a film that is likely to be enjoyed most by those that can appreciate it for it's artistic nature. The easiest way to appreciate it is to simply sit back and take in the surreal splendor of the film.
