  • In Spinoza's time atheism was punishable by death.

He avoided answering because of fools like you Marsha.

    Re read the ethics.

The root is in Naturalism comes from Parmenides through Zeno to Socrates, killed by idiot theists..

The concept of the infinite unity is the non person God, ie nature, ie not theistic.

    Deism is not Theism.

It is least action, perfect elegance, deterministic, ie Nature.

He negated religion, it is why he talked about it.

  • Richard Dawkins has noted, and I agree, that the culture of anonymity provided by nameless posts promotes rudeness. It adds nothing to discourse for you to refer to "fools" like me, nor to "idiot" theists. It's hot air. Futher, your mean-spirited defense would be anaethma to Spinoza who found respite among the Collegiants, a Christian fellowship. He had a close friendship with theologian Hentry Oldenburg. Civil exchanges, not rants, have more power to produce worthwhile relults.

  • @MarshaERH

I apologise for my undue rudeness.

However please try to realize that people have had enough of theology.

It is like someone saying 'If Santa was thin enough.. he Could get down the chimney..'.

However it is put to you, even arguments which address you in the most respectful ways.

What we get from religion is bigotry, authoritarianism, theological scams and anti intellectual child abuse.

Everything is one substance, be brave; reason and honesty.

    find the infinite unity.

  • Thank you for the apology. It signifies that people can disagree, yet maintain a sense of common humanity --the I/thou.

Bigotry, scams, and other abuses aren't limited to any one field of endeavor and always need to be denounced.

2 pts.: You sign off with an ontological statement, a theological position hardly distinguishable from the HIndu Brahman. You have some valid points but the answer isn't getting rid of religion, it's to rid religion of elements in conflict with truth & freedom.

  • @plod78 Great you stated what shpinoza said perfectly harmony and nature laws are god,we are the creation of evolution.

  • @marsCubed indeed

  • Your confusion of a philosopher who is crystal clear is due to the fact that you are reading the TTP which is a work of biblical criticism. The passage you read is an exposition of the bible's view but not his own For Spinoza god has no will, no plan, no intention, he cares not for our being of our welfare, he is the determined necessary cause of all causes the laws of nature. God is nature, there are no miracle, no immortality and no end. Steve Nadler a scholar of Spinoza says he is an atheist.

  • Dear Marsha, please do not take this as a personal attack, but I have to point out that you are sadly mistaken about the nature and intention of the concept of God as held by Spinoza. To understand fully his conception of Deus sive Natura, you must attend to his Short Treatise on GOd, and of course his magnum opus Ethics. Your comments which make him appear a Christian area taken out of context. If you find him convoluted it is because you mistake his intention.

  • @MarshaERH its results not relults

  • That which is truly infinite is non-reducable and also not actually concievable. I suspect this is why the ancient Hebrews were so reluctant to utter the holy name. It seems somewhat silly to me, when people talk about god as if nothing could be easier to define. Such profound and mysterious complexity cannot be framed by the symbolism of mere words. "There is no room in this new kind of physics for both matter and field for the field is the only reality." -Einstein (In other words, one.)

  • All anyone knows for a fact is that we are here on a planet that revolves around a sun in a galaxy which exists in what we call the universe. Everything is bound by natural laws which can be observed and often times explained through science and mathematics. The only evidence of any "God" is nature itself (the orderly harmony of what exists). Why are humans so arrogant, naive, and selfish to believe that an invisible man in the sky created everything (including us) and made us "top priority" ?

  • im not sure what the point of the video was but I certainly feel dumber for listening to it
