Wow. I worked at Hazeltine Corp. back in the late 70s. I was a wave solder operator helper for the operator. Watching these clips brings back a lot of memories. I can still smell the sweet scent of the flux /thinner.We used KESTER solder ingots, And had to strain the solder frequently of impurities.After the boards went through the machine they were bathed in a hot Vapor degreaser((Trichloroethylene) I will never forget those days. Hazeltine was one of the 1st in computer manufacturing!

how do they avoid heat shock fractures? do they preheat the PCB?

Its ERSA machine
Yes, the pcb is preheated to about 120 degrees C. The solderwave has a temperature of about 250 degrees C

how much Tin metal in necessary to keep the machine running?

@molinobeer It contains leadfree solder SACX0307. 375 kilo.
