Footage from Union Pacific's Moffat Tunnel in Winter Park, Colorado. It's elevation is 9000 ft, the highest point on the old Denver & Rio Grande Western system. You'll see two units leading, three in the middle, and a DPU at the end, for a total of five General Electric 3rd- generation locomotives , plus a rare EMD SD90MAC (with 4300 hp) leading this coal drag through the 2% grade of Moffat Tunnel. Speed limit is 45 mph. Another video from Moffat Tunnel will be released later.

  • You realize the leader is a EMD SD90MAC. I love the first 3 units, two SP's, NICE!

  • Wow thanks, didn't realize that. Those SD90MAC's sure are rare now.

  • damn...that's so cool

  • When I was in Colorado during the summers from 2000-2003 they would run three units on the point,, one or two units mid helpers and often two on the shoving on the rear. Interesting how a Railroad can change how they operate a train in relativley short amount of time. Plus they were running black with yellow end coal porters.

  • Didn't that tunnel have squirrel blowers on it to force out the exhaust ?

  • it almost looks like that UP is using an old D&RGW practice, running swing helpers and a rear end pusher

  • There's no "4 helpers". We see two coupled trains. Each has two dragging units and one helper.

  • those ex BN hoppers have CTRN reporting marks on them. I see several trains with these mixed MP/UP/ex BN cars go thru where I live

  • that is so true. sometimes union pacific has 4-6 helpers on the coal trains.

  • I miss the D&RGW but one great thing about UP (and SP, after D&RGW) is that GE's are now heavily used on this line.

  • Quite a collection of hoppers....old MoPac, C&NW, D&RGW, even BN....wonder why the BN hoppers since BN is not part of UP.

  • great video.mid train helpers and a DPU.thats what i like to see.
