ILIGAN CITY (MindaNews/02 February) --Clarie Morales Bontol, a 28 year-old graduate of the Iligan Medical Center College Inc. topped the Nursing Licensure Examination held last November 2009 with an average of 87.80%, a feat that made her physician-mother visibly proud.

Bontol led 37,526 other passers out of 94,462 nursing graduates who took the licensure examination.

Clarie's family learned about the result around 11 p.m. when her cousin based in Texas called up to inform them of the result.

"My daughter has a photographic memory," Clarie's mother Delia Bontol, a gynecologist, said of her daughter whom she described as a computer and web enthusiast.

"At first, we felt its unbelievable," the mother said, adding, "my daughter is not too diligent if we're going to talk of study habits. But she has a photographic memory.

"She's not so interested with outdoor activities; she's hooked to computers as she designs web pages too. She reads lot of pocket books," she said

The mother, the topnotcher's inspiration, related that Clarie did not top in elementary and high school because "she dislikes repetition of lessons."

"In fact, its very usual for us to see in her report cards her teacher's comment that she isn't listening in class," Bontol said.

The mother related that Clarie was once a biology student at the University of the Philippines and dreamt of becoming a physician.
"She garnered an average of 99.99% when she took the NMAT. But she failed to pursue medicine because a teacher rated her incomplete in one of her subjects in biology, she recalled.

"She was so frustrated at that time and couldn't be talked to, she said.

Clarie decided to study Nippongo and became a translator for visiting Japanese nationals for three years at the Manila airport .

''The pressures of urban life made her decide to come home and study nursing. We fully supported her in this endeavor," the elder Bontol said.

Claire is not the first student of IMCC who made it to the top. Jeanna Lou J. Morales ranked 9th in the June 2006 Nursing Licensure Examination.

Morales is currently a Global Scholarship Alliance awardee and the only one from Mindanao to pass the work scholarship in the United States. Six other Filipinos also passed the screening.

Morales took Master of Science in Nursing at the University of the Incarnate Word at Texas, USA while working as a staff nurse at the Baptist Medical Center.

IMCC awarded her P45,000.00 as incentive while the Iligan City Review Center gave her P10,500. (Violeta M. Gloria/MindaNews)

  • @djttv ahmm..coz she is educated...

  • i think she should mention the name of the review center where she took the review...try to look back also..coz you cannot reach that without them.

  • @MrPeyn12 it seems to me that the one who sounds "mayabang" is you! it cannot be denied that UP is an excellent school. that's why it's the "university of the philippines"! but that doesn't mean that all the topnotchers will always come from UP! ILIGAN MEDICAL CENTER COLLEGE is proud of the success of one of their students. give her the right to celebrate. FYI: she studied in UP, but she did not take nursing in UP. it is so obvious that you're just green with envy...

  • @namitsu1 we have 3 major language here in the philippines, its Tagalog(filipino), Spanish (espanyol) and of course English, majorty of schools here in the philippines including grades school follow"speak english" strictly.

  • @djttv I was wondering this too. I noticed this also in phil tv shows.

  • Just interested in why this is almost all spoken in english when she and most of the crowd are filipino and are in the philippines? Is english the official language in colleges, etc.?
