I was asked for my opinion on the best old school Swedish Death Metal albums that are available on cds by a few people now, so here it is. To a long time fan most of the choices would seem pretty obvious, but here's my say anyway. This video is meant to help the new fans get into the old school bands. There are many more Great albums with this being a good bunch to begin with.
This is not a Top 10 list in order, so the video was assembled randomly. I wouldn't want to put these in order anyway.
Entombed "Left Hand Path" - Recorded Dec. 1989, released in 1990 - is easily The most important Swedish Death Metal album, as it defined the sound of the genre and encouraged many other bands to establish themselves as well. If you don't have this, you don't know Swedish Death Metal.
The cd was re-issued many times and it should be easy to find a copy!
Unleashed "Shadows In The Deep" - Recorded and released in 1992 - is the band's 2nd full length and in my opinion their best effort from the old days. Sick riffs! The original and re-issues are all inexpensive and easy to find!
Dismember "Like An Everflowing Stream" - Recorded and released in 1991 - is the band's 1st full length and still has to be the most powerful record they ever did. Fantastic!
It has been re-issued many times and it should be easy to find a copy!
Carnage "Dark Recollections" - Recorded and released in 1990 - is the band's one and only album, after which the band split - with Michael Amott joining Carcass and the other members re-forming Dismember. Classic Studio Sunlight album, should appeal to every fan. Re-issue has all of the band's demos and is available on eBay.
God Macabre "The Winterlong" - Recorded in 1991 and released in 1993 - is the band's one and only album, but what an album it is! Instead of straightforward brutality done by others, these guys put a lot of atmosphere into the sound to create an album with a lot of soul. My personal favorite Swedish Death Metal album of all time, highly recommended! The original on MBR Records is hard to find, but it was re-issued by Relapse in 2002 with the band's 3 song demo when they were known as Macabre End, it's possible to catch an auction of it on eBay.
Sorcery "Bloodchilling Tales" - Recorded Dec. 1990, released in 1991 - is the band's one and only album. I guess it can be considered a concept album, as every song is a true bloodchilling tale! Truly great oldschool Death Metal of highest quality, should appeal to all fans!
The album was just recently re-issued with bonus demo songs, it is auctioned on eBay, get a copy while they're available!
Gorement "The Ending Quest" - Recorded in 1993 and released in 1994 - is the band's one and only album. The Ending Quest is easily one of the most brutal releases from Sweden. Lots of tempo changes, with parts grinding down furiously - while others are slow and filled with crushing doom! Fantastic album! Re-issued in 2004 and re-printed again in 2009 with all of the band's demos as bonus. eBay auctions for the re-issue are super cheap! Get a copy!
Grave "Into The Grave" - Recorded and released in 1991 - is the band's first full length and is a classick of morbidity and brutality! Highest quality Death Metal. Re-issued many times, should be inexpensive and easy to find, get a copy!
Necrophobic "The Nocturnal Silence" - recorded and released in 1993 - is the band's first full length. This album is pure Evil! Featuring one of the most talanted lead guitarists ever - David Parland! This one is hard to find, but there are eBay auctions for it from time to time.
Therion "Of Darkness" - Recorded in 1990 and released in 1991 - is the band's first full length and the only album that can be considered pure Death Metal, as the band went for a symphonic sound on later albums. Re-issued in 2000 with bonus demo tracks, should be easy to find a copy!
imho Desultory's 1993 "Bitterness" is by far one of the best swedish death albums.
