Berg isn't going to book a movie when he has this in the works. Friday Night Lights has made his career. He wouldn't write a script then ditch the cast with another director. This is something that he can only do.

You never know how it is in the movie business. Joss Whedon created Buffy, but the studio who holds the rights to the franchise have been thinking of a possible new movie without Whedon involved. Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell co-created the Evil Dead franchise, but they are both busy elsewhere so they hired Fede Alvarez to direct and Diablo Cody to write the new movie. Bryan Singer wrote the story that was used in X-men First Class but he was unavailable to direct so someone else did the job.

of course he will direct you stupid fuck. he came up with the characters in the first movie, created the show, why wouldn't he direct a movie on a show he created?
