Personhood Oral Argument

Personhood was widely discussed at the Supreme Court oral arguments for Roe v. Wade.
Note that among other things, the judges state that:
"The basic constitutional question, initially is, whether or not the unborn fetus is a person. That's critical to this case is it not?"
"Could Texas, constitutionally in your view, declare, by statute, that a fetus is a person for all constitutional purposes?"(Chief Justice Burger)
"The state could OBVIOUSLY adopt that kind of statute, and then it would have to be adjudicated." (Pro-abort Attorney, Sarah Weddington)

Personhood is feared by most "pro-life" groups because it would ban abortion and put them out of business. It is feared by politicians because it would expose that they really aren't pro-life.

@charadester Males have been hurt too by women aborting that male's child. Where are the rights of fathers? My husband when he was young wanted his child and his girlfriend.Her mother took her to kill his child.There should be laws for all considered.Pro life groups "NEVER", mentioning the male? They do. But women carry the baby. So if she does not protect that baby she is just as responsible as neglecting a 2 yr old.

If personhood begins at conception, why is the father of a child not required to begin full support of that pregnancy at that time? Why is the mother the sole responsible party, the one who will commit a felony if the child is aborted and incur the full weight of the law while the male walks away unscathed? Why would pro-life groups NEVER mention the male? It looks more like a hateful bashing of the female without no real regard to the child's welfare. I'd like someone to explain that to me.

Science, personhood, and legal rights all seem like valid points in the pro-life debate, but it is a sham by conservatives to derail the conversation, which needs to be about compassion, personal freedom, and the emotional/financial burden on the mother and society. What good can come from imposing a moral imperative which legally forces us to choose between a mother and an embryo? The goal to reduce/eliminate abortion is best served through compassion/education, not legal manipulation.

@antichoiceextremist Replace "flush" with "codify" and I completely agree. There is definitely a solid constitutional argument for abortion rights, but the vague privacy justification given in Roe was a pretty anticlimatic conclusion to the fight for reproductive choice.

@antichoiceextremist Roe v. Wade is a cancer to our political process as well. If it was still up to the states, like it was for most of our history, it wouldn't be anywhere near as big a issue. Justice Blackmun's opinion is silly too. It's a history lesson masquerading as constitutional law.
