Newt Gingrich lashed out at Mitt Romney Thursday, accusing his Republican presidential opponent of engaging in sleazy negative politics and being part of a fragile establishment desperate to stop the former House speaker from winning the GOP nomination.

Gingrich's attack came hours before the final Florida GOP primary debate, to be held at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville. The debate is being hosted by CNN, the Republican Party of Florida and the Hispanic Leadership Network, a center-right advocacy group.

"Many of you have probably noticed a number of attack ads and all sorts of junk, and that's what it is," Gingrich told a crowd in Mount Dora. "This is the desperate last stand of the old order throwing the kitchen sink, hoping something sticks."

They're trying to "drown us in enough mud, raised with money from companies and people who foreclosed on Floridians," Gingrich claimed. "Remember the Republican establishment is just as much as an establishment as the Democratic establishment, and they are just as determined to stop us. ... This is a campaign for the very nature of the Republican Party and the very opportunity for a citizen conservatism to defeat the power of money and to prove that people matter more than Wall Street."

Romney told a group in Jacksonville he will focus Thursday night on President Barack Obama, though he acknowledged that Gingrich's history might be a subject as well.

"We're going to have some choice time talking about the president and his failures, we'll probably talk a great deal about his State of the Union address and how badly mischaracterized he has described our nation at a time when so many people are suffering in this state and across the country," Romney said.

But "we may talk about the differences between ourselves as well," he added. "There may be some give and take."

One of Romney's most prominent supporters, however, didn't hesitate to attack Gingrich Thursday. Former GOP presidential nominee Bob Dole released a statement through the Romney campaign characterizing Gingrich as erratic, unreliable and certain to lead the Republican Party to defeat in November.

When Gingrich was in Congress, he "was a one-man-band who rarely took advice. It was his way or the highway," Dole, a former U.S. senator from Kansas, said. As speaker, Gingrich "had a new idea every minute and most of them were off the wall. ... Democrats are spending millions of dollars running negative ads against Romney as they are hoping that Gingrich will be the nominee."

The latest public opinion polls suggest that the battle for Florida's 50 winner-take-all delegates -- the largest catch so far this primary and caucus season -- is turning into a two-man race between Romney and Gingrich. According to a CNN/Time/ORC International survey released Wednesday, 36% of people likely to vote in Tuesday's Republican primary in Florida say they are backing Romney as the party's nominee, with 34% supporting Gingrich. Romney's 2-point margin over Gingrich is well within the survey's sampling error.

The other two candidates are far behind, with former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum oat 11% and Rep. Ron Paul of Texas at 9%, with 7% unsure of who they'll vote for.

Santorum is campaigning across the Sunshine State but Paul is showing up to attend just the two debates here this week. Both seem to be looking ahead to Nevada, Maine, Colorado, Minnesota and Missouri, which hold their contests early next month.

Gingrich received a boost in the polls after his double-digit victory in Saturday's South Carolina primary, but Wednesday's CNN poll and another by the American Research Group indicate that the former House speaker's momentum might be waning.

And Monday's debate in Tampa might not have helped Gingrich, as he repeatedly came under attack by Romney, Santorum and Paul over his record as House speaker in the 1990s, characterizations of influence-peddling after getting out of government and his past stance on health care reform. Gingrich didn't seem to mount an effective response to many of the attacks.

When it comes to debates, which have had an outsized effect on polls and on primary and election results, it was a role-reversal for Gingrich and Romney, and something that Gingrich needs to remedy Thursday night.

  • 2012 election is Nuts? You have 3 GOP candidates that have let greed Win over them in there past and it is all coming out at the same time you have one true statesman Ron Paul that gets ignored and falsely accused of half truths or deliberate lies by the Media. Obama has been found not a natural born by GA court and the GOP lost 8 precinct's votes in Iowa. Newt wins SC but earlier that day he canceled Town hall because no supporters showed up yet Ron Paul Host 1000's and gets last? Its rigged!

  • i love the united states of america, everything is entertainment and marketing. I love the charade.

  • News Bulletin: Gingrich is a liar! No Shit Sherlock....

  • @SHIBBYiPANDA The Constitution says The President has to be a Natural Born Citizen (NBC), but doesn't define the term within the document.

The term is defined within the third law passed by The st Congress, The Naturalization Act of 1790 which was passed less than a year after ratification.

The law clearly states that a NBC is a child of PARENTS who are citizens. This contemporaneous document defines what the public understood the term to mean when

    voting to ratify. QED.

  • @SHIBBYiPANDA John Bingham (R-Ohio) US Congressman, Architect of Sec 1 - 14th Amendment, March 9, 1866 - Sec 1 defines Citizenship - Foreigners can become a "Citizen" after ending there Allegiance to all Foreign Lands and Vowing allegiance to America by Law and will then fall under the Jurisdiction of the US which protects there Liberty and Rights but "Natural Born" are born in the US from a Father that is a Citizen prior to birth. He must Dwell in the US until the child is age 15.

  • @SHIBBYiPANDA Bingham Said Sec 1992 of U.S. Revised Statutes meant “every human being born within the jurisdiction of the United States of parents not owing allegiance to any foreign sovereignty is in the language of your Constitution itself, a natural born citizen. The father determines if someone is born an alien or not because under U.S. law citizenship of wives and children always followed the father. Obama Born 1961 of Father of Kenya and under British Empire Jurisdiction.

  • @txripper1 what evidence do you have that Obama isn't a natural born citizen? All searches I've done have proved that to be false.

  • Gringwitch another liar ? That qualifies him to be our next Pimp, I mean president. Oh ya Obama is better at coning the gullible war monger worshipers.

  • Am I surprised a man with 84 ethics violations, charges of tax fraud, money laundering, infidelity, voter fraud and stealing from his own campaign funds would lie? Nope. Not surprised at all.

  • RON PAUL 2012

  • @Zimnyification rofl def

  • @armandohdz1218 No, this is CNN setting the record straight. Mr. Lizard is a liar.

  • Now we know what Newt looks like when he lies. Normal. He can lie without blinking and he does, a lot. I knew it at the time, saying that he had friends who knew the content of a private conversation he had with his wife is ludicrous, and I'd be willing to bet that Newt saying he has friends is ludicrous, too. Notice how he says RC Hammond was 'advising' him on this issue. He didn't talk to his 'advisor' in the midst of that debate response. HE MAKES STUFF UP. He's a sociopath.

  • Ron Pauuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuulllllll!!!!!!!!!

  • Wow! chicken hawk Newt lies? Well there is some fucking news.....

  • And he won... What a shame !!

  • Gingrich lies about everything - he is a total hypocrite! RP 2012

  • Lawl get raped.

  • is this CNN trying to get back at Newt for making John King look like a dumbass and making a reference that the elite media is protecting Barack Obama? I think yes.

  • And you all still vote for mittens ,, newttins, and sanatorium napkine, while America lies in grave grave danger. Goodnite sweet America all is done if Ron Paul does not win.

  • @ranskye1 I know all of that. I also know they are reaping and will reap their complacency when America falls. We tend to think we're impervious to decline because we've been spoiled for years. We forget the great depression of the 30s and the recession of the 70s. This will make those look like a mini hoo hah. I was "that" person for years until I realized my laziness was part of the reason America is failing. That realization woke me up in a fitful way.

  • @AMERICASMANRONPAUL I have to say it, the majority of americans hardly care about following the elections to the point they would notice who is honest or who is not. most people think they are stuck with politicians they wont like.

  • @txripper1

I'm wondering the same thing, like if Ron Paul gets the majority of the votes to win and become President that the voting system is rigged to where he loses

    That would Suck! >_<

  • *GASP* Newt wrong!??! The hell you say! I assure you he was NOT wrong. He simply lied! Big difference when you know you're bullshitting as opposed to simply mixing facts by accident. Between he and flip-flopper Romney I still am amazed how any American in his or her right mind can even think of voting for these crooks. Dear God helps us all!!!
