2. Bigger is Better: By the early 20th century, the United States took the lead in the development of the telescope. Following the Yerkes refractor (the largest of its kind in the world), George Ellery Hale was instrumental in realizing the famous telescopes at Mount Wilson and Palomar Mountain. Astronomers realized the importance of high-altitude sites, and photography and spectroscopy became their new tools.

The "Eyes On The Skies" movie explores the many facets of the telescope - the historical development, the scientific importance, the technological breakthroughs, and also the people behind this ground-breaking invention, their triumphs and failures. It is presented by Dr. J, aka Dr. Joe Liske, a professional astronomer from the European Southern Observatory (ESO) and host of the Hubblecast video podcast.

"Eyes On The Skies" is an official movie for the International Year of Astronomy 2009 and the International Astronomical Union, produced by ESA/Hubble (the same team as behind the widely distributed movie "Hubble - 15 Years of Discovery").

  • I wonder how many scientific discoveries their are that the average joe does not know about..

Yet when Britney spears shaves her head, you would have to be living under a rock not to hear about it!

  • "Supernatural" according to my dictionary (Webster's New World) "not explainable by known natural forces or laws; specif of or involving God or ghosts or spirits, etc."

My point is that though the telescope is a useful tool it does not give us access to anything outside of nature.

  • How can anyone unlike this video?

  • u r on great cause i live day dreaming with ur features

  • @SuperFlyNB

Well couldn't miracle just mean something very unlikely happening.

You know like a proton passing trough a wall.

  • @thefakeyeti

Yeah. It really should be the other way around.

  • why have some 80 people rated this video down.....

its history and proven scientific fact.... its human heritage.

is it the lot of some people to be eternally ignorant, by choice?

then by all means be so.... but dont spread your cancer.

  • Anyone else cringe whenever he says telescope?

  • I was referring to Edwin Hubble, not the HST ;-)

  • That is interesting considering the distance to Andromeda had been known for roughly 60+ years before HST.

  • "Also, Andromeda is 2 million ly away. "

Yes, but Hubble's original estimate was 900,000 ly.

  • 3:30 Slight correction to your video.

It was Henrietta Leavitt who discovered that Cepheids could used to determine distances.

Also, Andromeda is 2 million ly away.
