One man's journey after spinal fusion surgery: pictures after surgery. Stan had a spinal fusion surgery in 2007 (C6-T9) to correct scoliosis and complications from a fall and other genetic issues. 3 weeks later, he passed out (with his body brace-thank goodness) while at the dinner table & fractured the T10 vertebrae. After suffering a year while his spine continued to collapse and quality of life diminished Stan agreed to another spinal fusion surgery which he underwent on Sept 4, 2008. As of August 13, 2009, he's still wearing a body brace during most of the day and is attending physical therapy 3x a week. Looking back at these pictures, we remember how tough this period was for the patient & caregiver. We can enthusiastically say...Life is good! Stan and I hope that by sharing his journey, it gives others an idea of what to expect after the surgery and the road to recovery.

  • 2007 and 2008 surgeries were similar - come in thru the side and remove discs, pack bone to stabilize the vertebraes, attach metal cages, flip him on his stomach and come in thru the back to attach the rods. Limited to 10 lbs lifting and recovery is probably going to take at least another year. Your son was riding a horse three days later? That's amazing! Thanks for sharing your experience.
