U don't need college for anything in life but obedience to authority...the Founding Fathers were all self educated- name any- Washington, Franklin, Jefferson, Adams... even scientists and inventors were never products of skool - Bacon, Edison, Faraday, Einstein, Newton and our contemporaries Feynman and Kanzius- all were self-educated individuals with a distrust for authority figures(read:teachers)...Noam Chomsky and John Taylor Gatto are two individuals who have extensively dealt with schools..

Of course college was not a requisite he is a writer. Not every writer needs to go to college but it is beneficial for many especially those who want to be well-rounded in the sciences.
