This is Vladimir Horowitz playing his Variation on a Theme of Bizet's opera "Carmen." This is, of course, from the 1968 CBS special taken at the one and only Carnegie Hall.

I recently ran into all of the Horowitz transcriptions and the direct link to this one is:

enjoy!

  • "There is something about perfection and artistry,

    which is contradictory because--"

    because what?

  • @1ddbb1 awwww come on. don't be so harsh on him. at the end of the day he still plays most of his songs properly and has a carrer as a concert pianist

  • So glad to have this here.

  • Stunnishing! Love it!! the 4 imbeciles should go play football or something like that.

Try listening only and then tell me that this performance is devoid of feeling and individuality.

It takes some cheek to write that Horowitz lacks individualism when he's playing his own variation.

  • If grimacing, eye rolling, shuddering and head shaking is considered individualism and connecting to the music, I'll pass. As an experiment, try just listening to a piece played by, say Horowitz, and the same piece by Lang Lang.

Can the music stand on its own merits, or do you need the visual gymnastics to to convince yourself of the worth of that performance?

Does music performances have to be like a badly done music video for it to be appreciated anymore?

  • @1ddbb1 Wonderful comment. I am nominating you for a Pulitzer prize

  • @ThePiano1991 Anyone can play the piano properly, but like most of his performances, where's the feeling? Where's the individualism? Where's the connection to the music? You might as well get a player piano if you like this kind of numb playing.

    Gay + Asperger = Assburger

  • @1ddbb1 Lang Lang can go fuck himself, this is how to play the piano properly. Amazing showmanship without all the stupid pathetic clown faces. No need for it! There is a video interview somewhere on youtube of Horowitz taking the piss out of faces like that. haha
