Stepping Dance Company Step Afrika! Pays Homage to Chiles Bicentennial

Step Afrika! to perform in Santiago, San Felipe and Pichilemu

As a tribute to Chiles Bicentennial celebrations, American dance group Step Afrika! will carry out a 10-day tour in Chile, January 6-12, offering performances in Santiago, San Felipe, and Pichilemu.

Step Africa! -- the first professional company in the world dedicated to the tradition of stepping will present its rich and colorful show at the Teatro a Mil Festival that opened this week in Santiago.

Founded in December 1994, the company is critically-acclaimed for its efforts to promote understanding and appreciation for stepping the dance traditions used as an educational tool for young people worldwide. By using the body as an instrument to create intricate rhythms and sounds through a combination of footsteps, claps and spoken word, the eleven dancers offer a model for the use of stepping in educational settings, espousing themes such as teamwork, academic achievement and cross-cultural understanding.

Step Afrika! offers performances in Santiago on Wednesday, January 6 at 9:00 p.m., at Parque La Castrina (San Joaquin District); Thursday, January 7 at 9:00 p.m., at Parque Andre Jarlan (Pedro Aguirre Cerda District); Friday, January 8 at 9:30 p.m., at Parque Peñalolen (Ave. Arrieta/Ave. Tobalaba); and on Saturday, January 9 at 9:00 p.m., at the Municipal Gymnasium (Lo Prado District).

The dance troupe is traveling to San Felipe (Region Five) to perform on Monday, January 11 at 8:30 p.m., at the Municipal Theater. The tour will close with a last performance in Pichilemu (Region Six) on Tuesday, January 12 at 8:30 p.m., at the towns Teatro Pista Municipal.

Stepping is a unique dance tradition created by African American college students. The tradition grew out of the song and dance rituals practiced by historically African American fraternities and sororities in the early 1900s. Stepping comes from a long and rich tradition in African-based communities that use movement, words, and sounds to communicate allegiance to a group.

Step Afrika! serves as a cultural ambassador for the United States, representing the nation at events around the world.
