3 1/2 year old girl started speech therapy at 2 1/2 years old. At 3 years, 5 months, she had a clear MRI and saw a pediatric neurologist who diagnosed her with Childhood Apraxia of Speech. She has no other developmental delays. With continued therapy, she has made WORLDS of progress in the last 4 months. I believe attending preschool and being forced to communicate with other children has helped her in her goal to want to be understood!

  • Thanks for posting :) Your daughter sounds so much like my son who is almost three. He has been diagnosed with apraxia of speech. He says "ad" for sad and so forth. He has been in speech therapy for almost a year. We've been using a feather, placed in front of his mouth, when he practices the words that start with H and now even for words starting with S and F. It works great because he can see the feather wiggle when he makes the sound. However, on a day to day basis, he lacks those sounds.

  • @SuperCorduroy Thanks for sharing! It's amazing what the speech therapist can get out of them, yet so hard to keep it up daily in every conversation they have!! It's been a long road, but worth every minute to see such progress! Best of luck to you!

  • He is and has been since 15 months. We tried group at first but he was thought to be a *disorganized* learner so we went with 1 on 1 1xweek. We don't have a dx of any sort and I won't seek one out at all. Motor Speech "issues" is what we are going with.. He is in full time daycare and doesn't have issues of any other kind. Words are coming, slowly, but surely. :) There will be words!!! :)

  • I know how frustrating it can be! But yes! THERE WILL BE WORDS!!! :) She goes 4x a week, but she is closer to school age and didn't start till she was 2.5, so you got a leg up on it! I think early intervention is key!

  • I also think being around other kids helps too!

  • Your daughter reminds me sooo much of my son.. At 12 months he wasn't making babbling noises. It wasn't until Sept/09 that he was able to say "hi" but tonight before bed I got "I love you mama, night night and amen after prayers. He can say some words very clearly (pineapple) but seemingly simpler words are more difficult (down). Breaking words down into syllables has worked a lot.

  • Ahhh! The Lisalisabobisaca - that is so wonderful to hear. It is strange how they can sometimes get those difficult words out, but can't get the simple ones out at all. Is he in therapy?

  • My son just turned 3 and speaks so much like your daughter did. I was watching your videos, which I came across while doing some research. I asked the drs at his 2 year checkup and spoke to a friend who is a speech therapist and they all told me to give it time. Well, now he is 3 and it surely has not improved and the poor guy gets so frustrated trying to get us to understand him. I am going to take him to his new pediatrician and get a referral. Thanks for your videos.

  • @pooksmom1 awww im nearly 13 now and i have severe verbal and motor dyspraxia (like worst the docter had ever seen severe) and when i was little only my close family could understand me and even they couldnt sometimes. i can see that you obviously love your daughter alot and i know that as long as your daughter tries and she gets help ( speech therapy ect...), in a few years no-one will know that she has it :)

God bless all of you xxxx
