Sawdust, the nitro would soak back into it and re-stabilize, the crates should have been filled with sawdust and then put in crates lined with sawdust, those would then be set on top of, you guessed it MORE SAWDUST!

When I saw this in the theater in 1977, we arrived late. We had missed two of the four back stories. I would like to see the entire film again.

BEWARE: This is the butchered European edit of the film, which cut out nearly an hour of footage. From IMDB; The European version of the film was re-edited and shortened by CIC, the European distributor, without director William Friedkin's permission. The prologue sequences set in New York, Paris, Vera Cruz and Israel that show what happened to the main characters and why they had to flee to South America, were changed to flashbacks running throughout the film.
