Something different: Some time spent improvising to a click with just the bass drum, snare drum, and hi-hat. Starts at a medium tempo, then speeds up.
Bass drum is the Yamaha PHX series, 22". Snare is a Dave Weckl maple 14'. Top hi-hat is a 13" mid-1980's Zildjian New Beat, with a 'K bottom.
Fun stuff!

  • Thanks for the feedback all!

The vid washot with a Canon 7D. Audio was recorded with an Edirol rh09 portable audio recorder, plus a plugin-mic direct to the 7D (don't have the name handy, sorry).

  • @AROBcyprus to "thelinedrummer, you are misguided and have fallen for Mike Johnston's BS marketing. I say this without doubt, because I fell for the same thing. I posted the EXACT SAME CRAP you did, about how Mike is the best, most innovative, influential drummer in the world. Believe me when I say that once I opened my eyes, I realized Mike is misleading on purpose. He sells his videos and wants people like you to do what you're doing. JoJo mayer is EASILY 20x the drummer Mike is. Easily

  • @thelinedrummer go away, please. go. Let me watch a good drummer instead of reading a bad drummer.

  • looks like a rabid beaver got hold of steves sticks!

  • Your hand technique (specially the left hand) makes me wonder if you have had a personal drum lesson with Dave....btw great video and groove...

  • sometimes is not even minimally with the metronome

I wonder if everything Weckl point game

  • the funky drummer

  • @thelinedrummer What is this, a pissing contest or are we learning the drums? Seriously man, every channel I go to and see your comments, you're trolling. Mike is a fantastic educator and an innovator in the "online drum lesson" segment of our world...but come on, he doesn't have the copyright. I love the fact that there are killer players like Steve (and Mike) posting lessons for us to learn from. Spend more time on the kit and less time at the keyboard trolling man.

  • IMO both sides should quit arguing and get back to playing. Both Steve & Mike are great drummers. If you don't dig one guy over another, fine, but why bother arguing over it or even debating it. It's all music guys, be happy we have it at our disposal.

  • @FaithIsAccidental Mike went to the forum to promote a lesson, and when people offered suggestions on making it better, Mike got VERY mad, saying that unless they could do better, they should not criticize him. He didnt realize that HOD has what is likely the most well-educated drum community, as well as big name players, and he basically went down in flames while trying to insult them, saying they're outdated, and that he (Mike) can show them how to run a real web site. It was embarrassing.

  • @drumpersonn Just saw this comment now, sorry. Well I don't know anything by that, and havent seen any proof of it so I can't really judge.

  • @drumpersonn Redeem himself from what? What did he say exactly? D:

  • @FaithIsAccidental Speaking of humble, Steve Holmes was extremely humble when he gave Mike every opportunity to redeem himself and take back the things he said. Mike was too dumb to realize this, and continued to hang himself, to the point where HOD members were really starting to question whether Mike was drunk or was actually suffering a mental meltdown.
