how fast were you driving?

Well that's in stark contrast to my 33 year old W123. She doesn't have oil leaks, vacuum leaks or any other type of problem thankfully. If you go to my profile page, there is a link there to my W123 you can then see first hand how these cars age IF they are looked after.
As for comparing a W211 on an 04 plate (I assume it's therefore 7 years old)? Tell you what fella, come back in 26 years time, and let's see if you hold the same opinion (assuming that the W211 still exists).

@EssexBoy696969 I totally disagree with you. However..... I have owned 2 different W123 (300Ds) in the past. Loved those old cars, except for the non stop vacuum leaks, huge puddles of oil in the driveway and garage... and sometimes having to open the hood to shut it off before I had fixed the new vac leak. They were great cars.... but they don't compare to what's out now. I've got an 04 E320 currently and it's a much better car than the W123... sorry. W123 was great but W211 is better.

Looks like it runs pretty good in the snow, getting ready to take mine out, its snowing here in Cincy.
Maybe you should say the Diesel Mercedes W123 Series!
Not only the best diesels, but all W123's were undoubtedly the finest engineered series of Mercs to ever leave the Sindelfingen factory in Germany. No other car in the 20th Century was engineered and hand-built so faultlessly - the W123 was undoubtedly Mercedes-Benz's finest hour and earns it's nickname of 'The Stuttgart Panzer'.
Unfortunately, modern day Mercs (S Class aside) are no better built than a Ford.
