Still pissed about the casting of this show. The year before Live Ent (the Canadian Producers) had done Show Boat with Hal Prince and it had caused a major uproar. So, to appease ppl the colour blind casting for Sunset happened. I will say this, Everyone who was at the Ford Theatre in Toronto has said by the time she finished this song, you were no longer looking at a "black" Norma but were WATCHING NORMA! Kuddo's Diahann.

Ms. Diahann Carroll was perhaps the best and most believable Norma DesmonD o of them all. She is a real singer whose magic has always been within the way she interprets a song. I saw Diahann Carroll perform this role over 10 times and after having seen Glenn, Patti, Petula, Betty, Linda, and Elaine Paige, all of whom where good in there way - yes even Petula - Diahann Carroll lived and breathed Norma on stage _ very few peolpe even know she played the role for almost two years

A side note: for the final scene where she is crazy after shooting Rex( he was great too btw) ,her costume was that of an African warrior-ess. Stunning and tied the casting into the show.... Diane was robbed not to have this role seen on broadway

I was there too , and got her to sign my Julia colouring book...to which she said "oh god another one of those" I was crestfallen,thought I was the only one hahah

Her singing was perfect the character she delivered had a specific haughtiness that all other actress DIDNT reach..this became Dianes role and I cant imagine anyone else now after seeing her....

You can sometimes find the CD from which this comes on EBAY - under Diahann Carroll - or Sunset Blvd Canadian Cast - it is very rare and hard to come by - also check international CD sellers - expect to pay big bucks for this one - I have brought five for gifts and it took me a year to gat that many - Ms Carroll's rendition of this score is simply flawless and remarkable, Diahann Carroll served you NORMA DESMOND LIVE!!!!!!
