I don't think he was trying to be funny. I think he was telling Pryor to "pick his spots" when he chooses to be funny and tell jokes. He was referring to that situation. He was trying to tell a serious story and Pryor was making jokes and making a mockery of the story. Which is why he said "pick your spots". He was indicating that the situation was not the right time to be telling jokes and laughing. At least that is what I got from his comment. In any case I am still a huge fan of Richard.

The Andy Kaufman bit was staged. Lawler has already said so. Kaufman was actually a cool guy according to testimonies from celebrities who knew him. I think he just loved to pull pranks on people. He also hated to be type casted or told what to do (in his comedic routines).
