Ballard "Pappy" Taylor was born in Ashe County, North Carolina in 1908. One of his early mentors on the fiddle was blind fiddler and recording artist G.B. Grayson, from whom he learned first hand. Starting in the 1930s Ballard played all over the South in string bands and on radio in Covington, Kentucky and Chicago. He developed a comic character, Grandpa Nerit, and soon went by the name of Pappy Taylor. In the 1950s Pappy joined up with his brother Tommy in Kentucky. He died in Covington, Kentucky in 1998. This was recorded in Covington, Kentucky in 1982.
