AIM at the base of the fire. This is what most people forget to do. You should be aiming for the source of the fire, the fuel that is ignited, not at the flames. Children should never attempt to use a fire extinguisher. When discussing fire safety with your family, let children know they are to get to safety first, then call for help. Fire spreads quickly, faster than you can imagine unless you have seen it happen. Your safety is #1. Get out unless you are sure your actions can contain the fire.
