@BarrioPunkRock oh ok i didnt realize the BEATLES and the ROLLING STONES didnt count

@BarrioPunkRock I agree with you full heartedly, The Monkees never got the credit they deserved

@monkeeman1966 I would imagine the mono versions quite often were recorded initially for the TV show... and making them for albums, they had to re-record them completely... a perfect example is te popular song Valleri. It was on the first season I believe of the TV show,.. some DJs even recorded it so they could play it. Valleri didn't appear on an LP until their 5th release "The Birds, The Bees, and the Monkees" - a re-recorded version. The original is on CD Missing Links Vol 2

densaner77: actually they started out that way. they were initially told that they were going to play on the records but that idiot kirshner reneged on the deal first 3 albums were vocals only but nesmith exposed the truth to people magazine. Kirshner was fired and the next album (Headquarters) was ALL them . As dolenz put it "every fucking note!" Also, how did they get away with concerts if they couldn't play???

Granted, the Monkees were nothing more than a manufactured pop/rock group like the Archies or the Banana Splits, I agree, but STILL, they provided wonderful catchy songs and memories during 1966-68.

@dawnabrendan I just think they liked playing around with them, since so many are different. Three versions of She Hangs Out, Pleasant Valley Sunday, Look Out (Tomorrow), Valleri, , You Just May Be The One, Mr Webster, Words, I'll Be Back Up On My Feet, Zor And Zam, etc. She and Let's Dance On had reverbed back up vocals. Some had added instrumentals, another version without. I am glad they did do those different things. I prefer the mono versions butI have stereo too. later...
The Monkees were no more a band than The Archies or The Banana Splits. What they did have was international TV exposure and excellent songwriters such as Neil Diamond and Carole King. They did put out some good tracks such as this and Last Train. However to view The Monkees as a band is missing the point as they were wholly manufactured for a TV show.

@densaner77 After the first two albums, they heard these same words... and music after that was done largely with them doing all the instruments... They also wrote many songs. Yes, they were initially actors thrown together for the show, but there is some music ability there, they chose these guys from hundreds of others. Do some research/// I did.
