Please enjoy Teresa's performance of a Japanese original song "長良川演歌 (Nagara-Gawa Enka), originally sung by 五木ひろし (Itsuki Hiroshi) as 長良川艶歌 (Nagara-Gawa Enka).
(Oka Chiaki) composed the song, and 石本みゆき (Ishimoto Miyuki) wrote the lyrics.

(Ukai), the traditional fishing to catch 鮎 (ayu) by using a trained cormorant 鵜 (U) by burning bonfire in 長良川 (the Nagara Gawa; the River Nagara ) in 岐阜(Gifu) prefecture opens on May 11 and lasts till October 15 every year.

The following are the Japanese lyrics, together with my English translation.

Mizu ni kirameku kagaribi wa
(I wonder for whom the bonfire is carrying a torch for )

Dare ni omoi wo moyasuyara
(while sparkling on the water)

Anata anata yasashii tabi no hito
(You, and you are a kind traveler)

Outa hito yo no nasake wo nosete
(By carrying the mercy of one night when we met together)

Kokoro makase no ukaibune
(The cormorant fishing boat is going aimlessly)

Suki to iwareta ureshisa ni
(Being delighted with your words you love me)

Yotte watashi wa moeta noyo
(I have torched my love in drunk)

Anata anata sugatte mitai hito
(You, and you are the person I would like to rely on)

Hada wo yosetemo ashita wa wakare
(We are to break up tomorrow after being together)

Mado ni yoake no kaze ga naku
(The wind of dawn blows against the window)

Soenu sadame to shirinagara
(Although we know we are destined for separate future)

Ima wa tanin ja nai futari
(We are no more utter strangers)

Anata anata watashi wo nakasu hito
(You, and you are the person who makes me cry)

Makura samishiya ukai no yadowa
(Pillows feel sad at the inn of cormorant fishing)

Asa ga shirajira Nagara Gawa
(The dawn breaks in the Nagara River)

  • Once again she captures my heart with that beautiful voice in a language I do not understand. Though your lyrics and translation do give meaning to the song. Another excellent piece of work and deeply appreciated, Masami-San. A work that must be seen over and over again. Till her next song.

    Dear Masami.

Thank you for your reply and explanation of ENKA songs.Yeps!!! Love affairs have many difficulties to accomplish here in Finland as well.People fall in love each other easily and get married, then divorced easily. To me makes no sense at all. This is the fact in Finland now a days. Some people haven't any responsibility to be a,,,You know what I'm trying to say. This is the present day.In Japan things are different I think.ENKA keeps Japanese people as a human I think.

Since my childhood, I yearned for a beautiful secenary image of Gifu, but unfortunately found no chance to visit there, although my hometown, Shizuoka, where I lived is relatively near Gifu.

  • Incidentally, I worked near the Nagara River three times a week and I just LOVE driving to and from work, the scenery is SO beautiful! Past two tunnels and suddenly, you feel like you are deep in the embrace of the surrounding mountians.. a very refreshing and peaceful feeling! -^^-

  • Konichiwa Masami-san!

I'm so sorry it took me so long to get here to listen to this song! Ukai season (comoront fishing) had begun! It is unbelievably peaceful and calm to go on one of these 2 hour trip. We eat on the way down the river, and then watch the experts work with the comoronts to catch (Ayu) sweet fish! I'm sure you have experienced this many times! -^^-

Thank you so much for this lovely enka and the beautiful pictures of Gifu! I live in a lovely place, yes? -^^-

    -Michiko
