The planar biped robot ERNIE, designed and constructed in the Locomotion and Biomechanics Laboratory at The Ohio State University walks at steady state on a treadmill with extension springs placed across the knee joints. The springs reduce the energy required to walk at the speed shown. Stiffer springs provide more energy savings at higher speeds, while softer springs provide more energy savings at lower speeds.
