As learners of Japanese will find out, there are many word that can interchangeably be written with an M or an N. Why is that? Well the romaji form of the word is written with an N , but when pronounced it really is more of an M sound.

If you look up hiragana , you will notice that then N hirana can be interpreted both as an N & M , once again because of the M sound.

Some examples of N and M words

ganbatte / gambatte

konbanwa / kombanwa

sanmai / sammai

sanpo / sampo

this character ん is pronounced as an English n sound. However, whenever an n, t, d, s, and z sound follow after the ん sound, the n becomes an m sound. Lets look at the word さんぽ. This word is pronounced as sampo. Notice that the po sound or the ぽ that follows after the ん sound turns the n sound into an m sound. Since the n sound and m sound so similar when Japanese speakers use them in their daily speech, youll be understood whether you say sampo or sanpo.
