@certifiedchillin420 SS-1 didn't go into orbit. It went straight up to 100 kilometers, and straight down, called a Sub-orbital flight.
To get to orbit you go up 300 kilometers, and then also the speed sideways, which is about mach 23. SS-1 has no sideways velocity.

correction: space ship didn't achieve orbit! It just flew over 100km, which is considered border of space, and returned.

they've tested spaceship one already. it broke through the atmosphere and was in orbit before safely returning.
