http://honolulucitydates.blogspot.com presents the real thing seen from a boat in Maunalua Bay in Hawaii Kai, Honolulu, Oahu, Hawaii.

The reason for a green flash lies in refraction of light in the atmosphere: light moves more slowly in the lower, denser air than in the thinner air above, so sunlight rays follow paths that curve slightly, in the same direction as the curvature of the Earth. Higher frequency light (green/blue) curves more than lower frequency light (red/orange), so green/blue rays from the upper limb of the setting sun remain visible after the red rays are obstructed by the curvature of the earth. Green flashes are enhanced by atmospheric inversions, which increase the density gradient in the atmosphere, and therefore increase refraction. A green flash is more likely to be seen in clear air, when more of the light from the setting sun reaches the observer without being scattered. We might expect to see a blue flash, but the blue is preferentially scattered out of our line of sight and remaining light ends up looking green.

With slight magnification a green rim on the top limb of the solar disk can be seen on most clear-day sunsets. However the flash or ray effects require a stronger layering of the atmosphere and a mirage which serves to magnify the green for a fraction of a second to a couple of seconds.

  • he was on a boat, chill out you fucks

  • its a good video and i definitely saw green. but i just saw a video, some moron shot in MA claiming to have green flash LOL!! um does it happen at dawn as well? either way the video showed dusk and no green. i wish more people would use awesome technology to capture incredible phenomena like this. good work

  • ... -.- the reason you "don't see no green flash" is because it's not a beam that shoots up or anything, if you look at the sun in the video, just before the video ends, the sun turns yellowish green. The reason it doesn't turn bright green or the green we are used to is because the camera can't pick it up, our eyes are way more sensitive to colours than cameras are.

  • lame

  • Iv been here before, it's called outrigger canoe club in Honolulu. Never had I seen a green flash though

  • what flash? there was no flash in this video. delete

  • i find this hard to masterbate to

  • I don't see no green flash!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @SheWolf8765 There are alot of variables. Atmospheric pressure is one of the biggest, followed by clouds. Obviously, if there are alot of clouds, they will absorb the green rays before they reach you. lol

  • He got da info frm wikipedia
