Title: homing tutorial part 1
Description:
This is a primer on setting up limit and home switches for a CNC machine. Focus will be on the concept of wiring for NO (normally open) and NC (normally closed) techniques and using the bit as the reference for the homing.

Review all of your info regarding homing with Mach. I have the pin limitation as you do. In fact you seem to be about 2-3 weeks ahead in goodies for your machine. I know you can hook your switches in series and put 1 at each end of travel and find a theoretical home by software however it wont do simultaneous homing. Only 1 axis would only be moving at a time. Since I now have a second PP (for the MPG2) that would allow for 3 pins to be used. This issue comes up all the time on forums.

In Mach on the Ports & Pins config page go to the "inputs" section. Set X++ , X--, X Home to the same port and pin. When the switch gets hit all three Diagnostic LEDs on for that particular motor will activate. Mach knows when you are doing a REF ALL and will react differently to the switch hit than it would if you are jogging or running a program. The guys at Artsoft have a pretty good handle on how things should work. I am VERY impressed by their product.

hi, can give more info on those switches please?
You do not need 9 switches to do limit and home switch functions. You can do all three axis with one switch per. When Mach does a home function it looks for a switch to trip. When it sees the trip it backs the axis off the switch and goes to the next axis. You can mount the switch in a position that is triggered by a vane on each end of the table/saddle travel to trip the switch. Configuration in mach takes care of switch function.

@whitehedr I think you just saved me a ton of work. Thanks for pointing this out.

I have 6 spare opto switches myself. I started down the 9 switch trail and "saw the light" before I went to all the trouble to mount them. The three switch solution is really elegant. If you wanted to use some external logic you could get it down to just one input going to Mach..

@whitehedr Can you "shed some light" on how to setup Mach3 (these puns are going to get out of hand) Do you set the min/max and home ports and pins all the same?
