London Underground: Embankment

Embankment is an underground station in London. There are four lines: District, Circle, Bakerloo and the Northern Line. The northbound platform of the Northern Line was built in a curve, so there was an huge gap between the train and the platform. This was the reason for the first "Mind the gap" announcements, which today also used on other lines.
At first Embankment was the ending of the "Charing X Euston and Hampstead Railway". Their trains turned back through a curve after the station. Now the line is named "Northern Line" and goes as far as Morden via Waterloo under the Thamses. Together with the old "City & South London Railway" the Northern Line has two branches: one throug Charing X and one throug Bank.

Embankment ist eine U-Bahnstation in London. Hier verkehren die District, Circle, Bakerloo und Northern Linien. Die Northern Line, die damals noch Charing Cross, Euston & Hampstead Railway hieß, endete hier früher in einer Wendeanlage. Deren Bahnsteig in nördlicher Richtung liegt in einer so starken Kurve, dass ein großer Spalt zwischen Zug und Bahnsteigkante enstand. So musste dem Fahrgast darauf hingewiesen darauf zu achten. Dies gelang mittels "Mind the gap" Ansagen, die hier ihre Geburtsstunde hatten. Heute führt die Northern Line weiter bis Morden über Waterloo und Kennington. Sie ist nun mit der früheren "City & South London Railway" vereint. Die Northern Line besitzt noch heute zwei Innenstadtsstrecken.
