Iranian students protest against Ahmadinejad

Hello on this Tuesday, October 9, 2007. I'm Kristin Volk with a UPI Headline Update.

About a hundred students staged a rare protest against Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. The protest happened yesterday when Ahmadinejad gave a speech at Tehran University for the beginning of the academic year. The president reportedly ignored chants of "death to the dictator" while giving a speech on the merits of science. Police at the event did not intervene.

Jurors in a British inquest into the cause of Princess Diana's death have begun tracing her last moments before that fatal car crash. Last night, the eleven jurors visited the crash site in a Paris traffic tunnel where Diana died. That's after the group visited the Ritz Hotel in Paris where Diana and her boyfriend Dodi Fayed slipped out and into a Mercedes on their fatal journey. The inquest began earlier this month and is expected to last no more than six months.

Former senator and "Law and Order" star Fred Thompson will make his debate debut this evening in Michigan. Thompson reportedly plans to assert himself as the consistent conservative runner. Rivals are expected to question his conservative credentials. Several vague statements that Thompson has made may also come into play this evening. That includes the former senator saying that he believes it would be wrong to absolutely rule out a gas tax increase as part of any major energy package.

Meanwhile, Senator Barack Obama is proposing a comprehensive energy plan. The plan reportedly attempts to combat global warming while ensuring American energy security. Last night in New Hampshire, Obama called for an economy-wide cap and trade program to reduce greenhouse gas emissions 80 percent by the year 2050. He also called for an investment of $150 billion over the next 10 years to create sources of renewable energy and advanced biofuels.
