i love how she walks up with hands folder face down like shes still a servant before the slap. anyone know what she says in chinese?
also i was too young to understand the powder scene when first seeing this but was that a implied rape like mentioned in comments below?

@Joeykanga95 No. If you have ever read the novel, Ballard never speaks of ill treating the servants. Quite the reverse. In any event such behaviour would have been severly punished by his parents. The English ex pats were never violent to their Chinese servants, just distant. It wasnt 1860 Alabama LOL.
Its more likely to be a pent up frustration with colonialism, the slap as a metaphor.

I love how it could be implied, or it could just be a false accusation on whether or not that person was raped. I believe she was...I wouldn't put it past those officers...And it's in historical records too.

@lavenderblossom I don't know why....but the idea of someone being raped in the bedroom, with the powder all over the floor never occured to me. The hand prints on the floor etc....good observation......I wonder if that was the intent of the director to make the viewer think that?

That would've been an awfully sharp observation - except that the white spots on his cheek are already visible in 3:14-3:16, so I think it's some sort of a reflection of light rather than specks of powder. Nice try though.
