This is the first in a series of Visual Essays by Scenic America; this one focuses on the threats to our cities posed by uncontrolled outdoor advertising and commercialism. For more information visit www.scenic.org.
@swingn8 Do you realize that newspaper, television and radio don't have the effect on the cityscape that outdoor media does? All these enormous attention-seeking outdoor ads destroy the scenery, covering up beautiful historical architecture, as well as nature.
First of all: don´t be such a cry baby. Japan is doing much worse than this. And not just the main streets of Tokyo. Every comercial urban area is flooded in ads.
Second: You are absolutely right to fight it. ¡That is not freedom of speech! Legalizing grafiti would be freedom of speech. What you show here is the government selling citizens mind space.
PS. Sorry for calling you cry baby... but I strongly believe whinning about it is not the best message to attract people to your cause.
i wouldnt say the real damage is on the scenery. the real damage is on the brains of the people. How many times nowadays have you heard of a teenage girl fighting anorexia and bulimia? how much time do you hear people work 12 or 14 hours a day to get that shiny looking car that will make other envious?
