Dean Friedman's infectious debut hit single, 'Ariel', a quirkily irresistible and uncategorizable pop song about a free spirited, music loving, vegetarian Jewish girl in a peasant blouse who lived, as the lyric goes, "...way on the other side of the Hudson." 'Ariel' [words and music by Dean Friedman]

Way on the other side of the Hudson, deep in the bosom of suburbia,
I met a young girl, she sang mighty fine, Tears on My Pillow and Ave Maria.
Standing by the waterfall in Paramus Park she was working for the Friends-of-BAI
She was collecting quarters in a paper cup. She was looking for change and so was I.

She was a Jewish girl. I fell in love with her. She wrote her number on the back of my hand.
I called her up, I was all out of breath, I said, Come hear me play in my rock and roll band.
I took a shower and I put on my best blue jeans. I picked her up in my new VW van.
She wore a peasant blouse with nothing underneath. I said, Hi. She said, Yeah, I guess I am.

Ariel

We had a little time, we were real hungry. We went to Dairy Queen for something to eat.
She had some onion rings. She had a pickle. She forgot to tell me that she didnt eat meat.
I had a gig in the American Legion Hall. It was a dance for the Volunteer Ambulance Corp.
She was sitting in a corner against the wall. She would smile and I melted all over the floor.

Ariel

I took her home with me. We watched some TV, Annette Funicello and some guy going steady.
I started fooling around with the vertical hold. We got the munchies and I made some spaghetti.
We sat and we talked into the night, while channel 2 was signing off the air.
I found the softness of her mouth. We made love to bombs bursting in Arrrrrriel.

  • In a strange way, I think this song sounds like a parody of Billy Joel. I know that Billy Joel was not really a caricature yet, in 1977, but this song sort of presages that.

  • how perfect for a song can a video be?

  • I fantisized about Ariel when I heard this song as a child. I was pleased a number of times with girls like her later in life.

  • That's my name! :) What makes it even better is it's good. I'm only 14 and I LOVE this song <3

  • I've not heard this song in YEARS..Love it..sweet memories of the 70's

  • @flipwiggins Sorry, it's just crazy man dan. I am interested in Native American history though. Never thought about the Mandan thing before, ha.

I remember WLS too but it didn't come in as good out here as KOMA. It's crazy to remember those days though, isn' it? Then FM killed AM, MTV killed them all, and now look what we've got.

Most of the music today can't hold a candle to this old stuff, though. Better days, long gone, if you ask me. Now everything just looks and sounds the same.

  • @crazymandan59

Mandan, huh? I'm very interested in the Mandans and Hidatsas, so I'm curious about your name. Or maybe it's just Crazy Man Dan!!!! Anyway, yes I occasionally listened to KOMA back in the day. I lived in a real small town in OK., and at nighttime on the AM side of my radio, I could also get WLS out of Chicago, and WOAI in San Antonio. Yeahhh, it's cool that this song is posted here. It reminds me of a real sweet girl I knew back then. Cheers.

  • @flipwiggins Hey, did you ever listen to KOMA out of Oklahoma City? That was a huge station-- at night anyway. They'd crank it up after about 6 or so, and I was a whole state away and listened almost every night. I'll never forget their jingle-- Kaaayohemaaay, Ooklahoma Citeeeeee.

I guess I should go search it before I post, but I know this song came out while I was still in high school-- I graduated in 77.

Hadn't thought about it in many years until last night. Glad to see it's up.

  • The only other place I ever heard this was on KLOR radio in Ponca City, Ok., during the summer of 78. Great memories and great fun. Thanks for posting.

  • That Ariel Pink cover is one of my favorite Ariel Pink songs, and I love me some Ariel Pink. I was hoping someone would have posted that one somewhere on youtube.
